Researching what is happening in ‘The Big Experiment’
My name is Don Passey, and I am a senior researcher who works in the Department of Educational Research at Lancaster University.
You are likely to see me and my colleagues around, so I thought I should let you know who we are, and what we are doing!

Why are we interested? I think ‘The Big Experiment’ is a very interesting project, and I would really like to know what happens when you are working on it. I know a lot of other people would like to know that too! And that is basically what we are doing – we will be around to find out what happens. We are interested in how people learn, and what they learn. We find those things out by watching what happens, and by asking questions. We will try not to get in the way, but we may want to chat about what you are doing, and would like to ask you questions at various stages during the project.
How will we do that?
We will be asking you to:
· Complete a questionnaire (on paper) before you come to the 2 week event.
· Explain what you are doing at times during the 2 week event.
· Reflect on how well things have gone at certain times.
· Complete a short questionnaire (online) at the end of each day during the 2 week event.
· Complete a questionnaire after you have completed the 2 week event.
None of these should take too much time, but all of them will help us to build up a really valuable picture of what is happening.
Other colleagues of mine will introduce themselves to you - we look forward to seeing you all.
If you do have any questions about the research, do send them to me – I will be happy to answer your queries if I can.
